If you didn’t see it, stop reading this now. Consider yourself warned For six seasons I’ve loyally watched Dexter , so last night’s pivotal plot point in which Debra learned her brother Dexter is a murderer, something that’s been under wraps since day one, should have been the greatest of reveals. But I just couldn’t shake the dirty substory of Deb deciding she is in love with her brother. Let me back up, Deb has been attending therapy sessions this season because she’s seen endless horrible things as a Miami Metro lieutenant. But out of the blue in one session, the therapist suggested that Deb has a crush on her brother. Supposedly softening the blow is that Deb and Dexter aren’t blood siblings; he’s adopted. But it doesn’t matter. They were raised as brother and sister–that’s the only way the audience has ever seen them–and now we have to sit through dream sequences in which they kiss?

Dexter finished its eight-season run tonight with a series finale that is certain to rankle. And how did the series end in general? Not well. Full-on spoilers after the jump. First: Deb dies.
When Debra started dating her superior, FBI Special Agent Frank Lundy. Dexter had to start sleeping with the strange new woman in his life.
The premiere of the final season of “Dexter” starts off with a beautiful scene of Dexter flying a kite with his son, Harrison. And it’s all downhill from there. Although Dexter’s life seems to have improved since LaGuerta’s death, there are several indications that this is untrue. He glances forlornly at the orchid his former lover, Hannah McKay, left him before she disappeared. Dexter increasingly has outbursts of anger, even going so far as to choke a man for simply cutting him off on the road.
Dexter’s relationship with Deb has also deteriorated. They haven’t spoken in a month. Our first glimpse of her is as she snorts cocaine before hooking up with a guy who’s clearly up to no good. But it seems that Deb and Dexter’s separation has run its course because Dexter begins to dig into her disappearance, more and more worried as he finds both recreational and prescription drugs throughout her apartment. I would be worried too if my sister started mixing drugs.
But I would have been more worried if she killed a woman.
Why Michael C. Hall was never the same after Dexter
As the Showtime series comes to what looks like a disastrous end, let’s take a look back at some of the show’s bigger missteps. Sure, Dexter had some bright spots in its eight seasons, but there have been many mistakes that got us to the very low point that is the show’s final season. In Season 2, Deb became romantically involved with the much older Frank Lundy. It wasn’t the age difference that was the problem — it was that Debra was forced into another “inappropriate” romance, so soon after her relationship with the Ice Truck Killer.
Dexter star Michael C Hall marries for the third time in a surprise wedding. The happy newlyweds have been dating since and made their first official appearance “And it will be a talisman to me for the rest of my life.”.
When it was announced that Dexter’s eighth season would be its last, the news was not entirely unwelcome. The show had never fully recovered from the devastation wreaked by season four’s main villain the Trinity Killer John Lithgow , and this final run has played out that inferiority, being patchy, unfocused and, at times, sloppy. Yet for all its flaws, I stuck with it, and hoped the series finale, at least, would be worth the wait.
It wasn’t. And I’m disappointed. It all fell apart completely in the last few minutes, with Dexter making two boneheaded, un-Dexter-like decisions that wearily knocked the final nails into the coffin that season eight built. Our protagonist sailed his boat, Slice of Life, into a hurricane, and was pronounced missing, presumed dead. His fugitive girlfriend Hannah choked back the tears in a cafe in Argentina and took Dexter’s ever-irritating son Harrison for ice-cream, presumably to soften the blow of his daddy’s watery death.
But Dexter wasn’t dead, after all! He swam like a greased porpoise away from a deadly hurricane and ended up in Oregon, where presumably he will live out his days chopping down trees and tending his awful beard. Dexter survives eight seasons of hacking and stabbing, leaving “a trail of blood and body parts,” and yet viewers don’t get to see him caught or killed. In fact, it was his foul-mouthed, grumpy sister Deb who died, without getting the heroine’s death she deserved though she wobbled, she was the show’s moral centre.
She ended up in a vegetative state, having been shot in the stomach by Oliver Saxon, Dexter’s last-minute nemesis and the son of his mentor Evelyn Vogel, at the end of the penultimate episode. So Dexter switched off her life support and dumped her body in the ocean, where the bad people go, then sent his son to live with Hannah, who, despite seeming quite nice this season, might conceivably poison him at some point in the future.

‘Dexter’: Why Does the Cast Keep Sleeping Around?
But in actual seriousness, I do know what Carpenter means. For eight seasons on the dark cable show Dexter, Carpenter played foul-mouthed Debra, sister of Michael C. Hall’s title character. In some ways Deb was more messed up than Dexter, and he was a serial killer, so that’s saying something. And I thought it was sort of a nod to how smart TV audiences are now.
